80% of people have "reservations" about laser eye surgery

Four out of five people have reservations about having laser eye surgery, despite the majority of people in need of vision correction believing it is a safe and established procedure.

That is according to a new report published by the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) which has launched a new awareness campaign to ensure that people considering laser vision correction have access to accurate, up-to-date information.

It follows a recent survey of 1,000 people across Europe which found that laser eye surgery is being strongly considered by people with poor eyesight but they are struggling to overcome the final hurdle.

ESCRS president Jose Guell, a leading eye surgeon from Barcelona, commented: "We hope that our new campaign, LASIK Safe in Our Hands will help to bridge the information gap so that more people might benefit from good vision without glasses."

Earlier this week, Tony Veverka, chief executive of Ultralase, told the Belfast Telegraph that laser eye surgery is a "safe and effective" treatment which can also be cost-effective when long-term outgoings on spectacles are taken into account.
