Contact lens wearers who regularly use computers and other backlit screens need to make sure they keep their eyes healthy to avoid so-called digital eye, according to an expert.

Leading optometrist and author Dr Jeffrey Anshel warned that people blink less often when using a computer or any other digital screen. A lack of blinking can lead to dry eye and can result permanent vision damage so people should give their eyes a break and blink.

He also advised that people remember the 20/20/20 rule. This means that while you work on your computer make sure that every 20 minutes you look 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds to allow your eyes to refocus.

If you use computers and digital screens often and for long periods of time, let your optician know. They might be able to provide you with a different prescription, he Dr Anshel suggested. You should also make sure you have yearly eye tests to monitor any deterioration and gauge the impact on your vision.

Lastly he advised that people use a digital screen in a well-lit room as good lighting can help avoid eye strain, while glare and low light can damage eyes.

Contact lens wearers can also use a new iPhone application which is designed to help people"s eyesight. Ocularis - The Eye Game tests and enhances the user"s optic abilities.ADNFCR-1853-ID-19643877-ADNFCR
